Mickey Mouse sugar skull design
Black and grey · Flash
A flat black illustration of a skull in the style of a Day of the Dead sugar skull, with two large round ears on top that match the shape of Mickey Mouse. The face is filled with curling scroll motifs, a small flower-like detail between the brows, and dotted lines along the upper teeth. The design is solid black on a plain cream background with no shading or colour, and it is centred in the frame.

Sit yourselves down, sit, the lift has been broken since the spring and nobody on the fourteenth floor is going anywhere tonight. You know the mouse who lives behind the bin chute at Harrow Point? No? Good, he prefers it that way. He has ears as round as dinner plates, and for forty years they have been the reason he never got past the grille on the stairwell door. Every time he tried, the ears stuck, and he sat there with his nose through the bars, listening to the families upstairs.

Then came the week of the dead, when the flats fill with marigolds and everybody leaves bread and sugar skulls on the window ledges for their grandmothers. Mrs Okonedo on the ninth floor was making hers from paper and a bag of icing sugar, and she set one on the windowsill to dry. The mouse climbed the drainpipe to smell the sweetness, and the skull looked back at him with its two black holes, and he thought, that one has ears just like mine.
So he went home and asked the paper for a face. He copied the curls from the iron railings, one spiral for the boy who taught him to whistle, one for the bus driver who never shouted, and a small flower between the brows so he would always know which way was forward. Then he waited for the night when the lamps went out and the dead were said to climb the stairs. The grille swung open for him, the ears slipped through like a pair of folded umbrellas, and he went up nine floors on the strength of his new face.
Mrs Okonedo was waiting at the top with a saucer of milk and a candle. She did not scream. She said, well, you took your time, and set the saucer down, and the mouse laughed with a row of dots along his teeth. That is why the grille on the stairwell still sticks. Some nights, if you listen, you can hear it giving way.
