Microphone and ink splatter on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed microphone is tattooed vertically along the forearm, with its mesh head at the top and its cable curving down and away at the bottom. Dark splatter marks spread across the lower forearm beneath the microphone, adding contrast. The shading is black and grey, with highlights on the metal body, and the background is a red surface with a dark sleeve and sneaker at the edge of the frame.

The cable was still warm when Ray unplugged it, the way a kettle stays warm after the tea's been poured. Forty people had gone home humming the wrong chorus, and the red carpet in the Crown was tacky with spilled lager under the bar lights. Nobody had told the new lad on the desk that the house mic was older than the building.

It was a black dynamic with a grille gone the colour of old teeth, and it had stood on the same chrome stand since the Crown reopened in 1987. Dot came out from behind the bar with two halves of bitter and didn't ask me to sit down. She nodded at the dark splash on the boards beside the stage steps. "Terry Kell, that was. Threw his pint at the drummer for playing a cover nobody asked for. Took the mic lead with him when they threw him out, and we got the mic back in a carrier bag."
I asked why nobody had scrubbed it off. She said the stain was the only thing in the room that had never once gone out of tune, and I laughed, because she was right and because I was too tired to argue. We left the cable where it fell, a black loop across the boards, and I did not coil it, which is not like me.
In the morning the splash had dried to a shape like an open hand, or a crown with its points knocked off. I drove home with the windows down and the mic on the passenger seat under my jacket, grille facing me. Dot had told me to take it. A mic's no use to a silent room, she said, and at every junction I half expected it to start up on its own.
