Miles To Go lettering with semicolon
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a fine script tattoo on the inner wrist, reading Miles To Go with a semicolon before the first word. The linework is smooth and even in black ink, with the letters sweeping upward from left to right. The soft, neutral lighting and plain background keep the focus on the lettering.

Hush now, and sit closer, because the fire is low and the ridge road is longer than it looks by night. You want to know why Oda Penhallow never stopped at Carrow Bridge, though the bridge was dry and the kettle was hot. I'll tell you, but you'll have to hold the lantern steady, the way she did.

She carried the last working seed-clock from the drowned coast to the terraces above Dunmere, a brass box no bigger than a loaf, wrapped in oilcloth and tied against her chest. The dust storms had taken the old roads. Every few miles a signpost leaned out of the grass with its letters worn to ghosts, and she read them aloud to keep her feet moving. Her mother had taught her that: say the distance, then say the next thing you'll do.
On the third night of the long walk, she found a roadside stone with someone's words cut into it, half buried, the chisel marks softened by a century of wind. Miles to go. Beneath them sat a small curled mark, a stop that was not quite a stop. She sat with her back against the stone and laughed until she cried, because it was the only sentence she'd met in months that seemed to know she was tired and still wanted to go on.
She got the clock to Dunmere on the ninth day. Nobody there remembered the stone. Oda walked back the following spring with a new chisel and went over the same shallow letters, and when the children asked why she'd bothered, she said the mark was there to tell the next walker that the road wasn't finished with them yet.
