Minimal giraffe tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A giraffe is tattooed vertically along the inner forearm, with its head at the top, a long single-line neck, and a spotted body above four thin legs. The linework is fine and the spots are built from dense dots and short marks, giving the body texture while the neck and legs stay sparse. The design is in black ink only, with the skin and a wooden floor in soft greyscale around it.

The guards at Hollin Ford had been told to watch for smugglers, not for a giraffe. So when the animal came down the north bank at first light, its neck raised above the reeds like a mast, nobody thought to stop it. The carter's girl called it Ansel, because it came when she whistled and she had read the name in a book about explorers. Nobody argued with her. Nobody argued with anything that walked so calmly into a river.

On the far side lay the town of Brenn, where a widow named Oda kept the only clock in either valley that still told true time. The two towns had not spoken in three winters. Each wanted the other's salt and each would sooner freeze than say so. Ansel carried nothing over. On the way back, tucked beneath the leather strap across its chest, there was a letter sealed in beeswax, addressed to nobody at all.
The guards found it when Ansel stopped to drink. Inside was one request: the clock's second hand, returned, so that the people of Hollin could set their own hours by a true bell. The guards argued for an afternoon. Then the eldest of them climbed the bank to see what the neck had been reaching for. Above the willows there was only a single thread of smoke from Brenn, rising straight up in the still air.
They sent the hand across that evening, wrapped in wool. The next morning Ansel took it over, and the valley says the animal stood in the middle of the ford with its legs in the current and its head level with the hills until both towns had seen it. Then it walked back to the carter's girl, and nobody asked it anything else.
