Black and grey photograph of a woman's upper back showing two mirrored geometric sunburst tattoos over the shoulder blades, with the hair in a bun.

Mirrored sunburst tattoo across upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the bare upper back of a woman with her hair tied up, seen from behind. Two mirrored geometric tattoos sit over the shoulder blades, each built from a half-circle of radiating segments, a ring of stepped triangular spikes and bold outer outlines. The solid black linework and fills contrast sharply with the pale skin and a plain light background of hexagonal shapes.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the bees, they've been at the windfalls again. I'll tell you about the gates at Thornhay, because my grandmother swept their paths every Saturday for forty years and never once let me forget it.

Old Walter Brindle was the smith in that valley, and he could not abide a pair of anything that didn't match. A widow called Mrs Ada Penhale came up the lane with a walled garden, a sharp tongue and a wish for two gates, one at the top of the steps and one at the bottom. She wanted them to look like the sun coming up over the fell and going down behind it. Walter said he could do it. When they were hung, every spoke on the left one answered the spoke on the right, as if one had been struck from the other.

He set a ring of spikes round the outer edge to keep off the lads who came for her plums, and he turned the points outward so they stood like a crown nobody could take. Mrs Penhale paid him one sovereign and a jar of quince jelly, and he never came back to see them again.

Here is the part you'll want to know. On the longest evening of the year, when the sun dropped behind the fell, both gates swung wide and the shadows of their fans crossed the lawn and met at the sundial in the middle. For a minute there lay a whole sun on the grass. Walter was out there with his pipe that evening, and he said afterwards it was the only thing he'd ever made that finished itself without him.
