Mockingbird quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with a single line of text tattooed in blue ink, reading "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird." The letters are fine and evenly weighted, set in a serif typeface and running horizontally across the arm. The background is a blurred pavement and light tones, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Nell, the bird your uncle sent over from Georgia came off the Liverpool train in a crate that still smelt of tar and hot tin, and by the second week it was doing the postman's whistle better than the postman. Your uncle wrote that they call them mockingbirds out there because they will sing anything they hear. I did not believe him until the Vicar's wife stopped in the lane to ask who had taught the thrush to sound like her kettle.

Mr Pascoe came up from the wood on Sunday with his twelve-bore over one shoulder, saying the thing had been whistling his spaniel off the pheasant drive. I told him a bird that copies a whistle is no thief. He said a bird that copies a man is a nuisance, and that was the end of the argument as far as he was concerned. He stood at the gate with the barrel tipped towards the hedge, and the bird sat on the top rail and sang him his own dog, the sharp clicking call he gives when he wants her to heel.

Pascoe laughed then, properly, the way he has not laughed since his wife went into the infirmary in the spring. Before he left he asked whether it was a sin to shoot a thing that only repeats what it hears. I said I thought the sin was in the shooting, and he did not argue. He broke the gun open, put the cartridges in his coat pocket, and asked if I had any seed to spare.

I have left the cage door open. The bird comes and goes at the edge of the wood now, and some mornings I hear it calling a spaniel back from the trees, though she has been dead since Easter.
