Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small circular tattoo sits on the inner forearm of a person wearing a dark top, with the wrist and hand visible at the lower right. The design shows a thin outlined circle enclosing three solid dark rings and a few small marks arranged around the centre. The linework is fine and even, and the tattoo is in black ink with no colour.

The rings were my job, and I had them in my waistcoat pocket, all three in a tin that once held Imperial mints, when the vicar's wife came round the corner of the vestry looking for the ushers. Gran Ada had sent the tin up from Penzance with a note in her round hand: Keep these from the sea air and from Dennis. Dennis was the groom's brother and had already tried to borrow a fiver against the reception bar.

The seal Gran had pressed into the lid was the thing I kept touching. It was a circle drawn tight with a fine nib, three dark rings set inside it like the eyes of a patient animal, and a scatter of small marks around the middle that she said were the names of the households who had married into the family. I had asked her once what the marks said. She had tapped her nose and said, when you're older.

At the altar the tin would not open. Dennis had glued the lid shut as a joke, and for ten seconds I stood there with the organ holding its breath while I worked my thumbnail under the seam. Then the lid gave with a small crack, the three rings sat in the velvet exactly as they should, and Gran, four pews back, made a noise I had not heard from her since her husband's funeral.

Afterwards she took the tin from me and turned the lid to the light. Those marks, she said, are the dates the rings were bought, not who married whom. Nobody's ever checked. She pressed her thumb to the lid and left a smudge of ink on my cuff that took a week to fade.
