Dotted star constellation on chest and shoulder
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare upper chest and shoulder, with no face visible. Three small asterisk-like star marks are linked by fine dotted lines in a constellation-style arrangement on the chest, and a further dotted line sits near the collarbone and shoulder edge. The work is in black ink with delicate, evenly spaced dots and soft natural skin tones around it.

The oven at Hollin Cross would not catch that winter. Mara riddled it, fed it split pear wood, and still the flame lay down flat and sulked. The dough sat in the trough like wet clay while the miller's boy stood at the back door with his cap in his hands, asking whether there would be any bread at all. Mara went out into the frost. Over the chimney stack the stars had gone thin, and three of them that her grandmother used to call the stitch had gone missing.

She climbed the ladder with a pot of soot ink and a pin, the same pin her grandmother used to prick the top of every loaf. Up on the slates she dotted the sky where the stitch had been, one small point at a time, joining them with a fine line so the dark would know where to hold. Her fingers cramped and the ink thickened on the pin, but she kept going until the three stars came back, pale at first, then sharp as a baker's mark.
The oven caught with a sound like a breath drawn in, and by first light the loaves were rising gold. The sky, though, wanted paying, as the old women always said it did, and Mara knew the price was her first loaf. She carried it to the back door and gave it to the miller's boy, who had watched her from the yard the whole time and had not once looked away.
After that, the bakers of Hollin Cross pricked a dotted line into the crust of the first loaf of every batch. When the stars came out over the chimney they still matched it, and anyone walking home before dawn with warm bread under one arm could find their way by the stitch.
