Paper airplane with dotted trail on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of a paper airplane flies to the right, with a loose dotted trail curling behind it. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink sits on the ankle and side of the foot. The plain skin tone and dark background keep the design as the clear focus of the composition.

Dear Tomasz,

The gulls have taken over the north quay since you left, and Mrs Pryce has put a bench where the lobster pots used to sit, so you will have to find a new place to sulk when you come back. I am writing this on the back of the tide tables because the good paper ran out after the funeral notices. Father says it is a waste to send a letter that will only sink, so I am folding this one into a plane instead, the way you taught me on the wall behind the chandlery when we were small.
I threw the first one from the harbour wall at seven this morning. It went out low over the boats, dipped as it caught the wind off the breakwater, and kept going past the buoy until I lost it in the glare. The second one I did properly, with the wing creases sharp, and I drew a line of dots behind it in pencil so you would know where it had come from. Mr Okonedo from the fish market says the wind goes east by Sunday, which means if you are anywhere near the Channel, it will find you.
Here is the thing I should have said before you signed on. The boat is not the problem. Lighthouse Row is not the problem. I am the one who keeps standing at the edge of things, waiting for permission. So I am going to the ferry office on Thursday to ask about the crossing, and if they say no, I will fold another plane and try again.
Your sister, Ines
