Moon face with capsule on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo of a moon with a human face in profile-style shading, with a cylindrical capsule embedded in one eye. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with dark cratered textures across the surface of the moon. The image is in black and grey and is cropped to show the upper arm and shoulder, with the rest of the person and background out of focus.

The moon on Skerrow used to have no trouble with her face. She hung over the harbour every night with her eyes half shut, like a woman waiting for the kettle, and the boats came home by her light. Then the men from the mainland came with their iron birds and their ideas, and one of them fired a tin capsule up the sky from a cannon, and it went straight into her left eye.

Nobody on the island believed it at first. Mairi Gunn saw it from the top of the peat stack and said so at the kirk, and the minister told her to sit down. But the next week the moon came up with a shut eye and a brass cylinder stuck in the lid, and she didn't look at the boats at all. The herring went deep. Old Tormod said she was crying silver, and that was the reason for the salt in the bread.
So the island sent a boy up the cliff path with a rowing boat and a bag of cold porridge. Callum Beag was nine, fearless, and a poor swimmer. He rowed out past the last lobster pot on a flat calm night and waited for the tide to lift him. When the moon came level with the water he reached up with a gaff, and she looked down at him, and the capsule rattled loose and dropped into the sea with a sound like a cough.
She opened both eyes after that. The herring came back in the spring, the boy grew up still a poor swimmer, and every October the island leaves a tin cup on the harbour wall for the capsule's crew, in case they want their tea. Nobody has ever come for it.
