Moon over mountains and hills on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A full moon sits in a dark navy night sky with small stars above a range of pale peach and teal mountains. Below, layered green hills frame a winding light path, with soft stippled shading across the landscape. The scene is contained in an upright rounded panel, centred on the forearm against a plain background.

Dear Mam, the last ewe lambed at three this morning, twins, both up and sucking before the sun had thought about it, so I have an hour with the lamp before the next round, and I'd rather spend it on this than on sleep.

You'll not believe the moon we've had. Full on Tuesday, sitting right over Carn Dubh as if someone had hung it there for the sheep. The snow took the light and gave it back blue, and I walked the bottom track to fetch Dad's dog from Hutchison's without a torch. The hills went down in those green-black folds and the path wound between them like a bit of thread somebody had dropped, and I stood at the gate thinking how small the farm looks from up there, and how much I've decided I want to see past it.
I've written to the ferry office in Stranraer. They want someone for the winter crossings, cattle and freight, and the pay is better than anything here. I haven't told Dad. I'll tell him when I've a yes in my hand, because you know what he does with a no before he's had his tea.
If I go, I'll walk that path once more on the morning I leave, and I'll leave the lamp burning in the kitchen window so you can see it from the road. Don't let him switch it off. Love, Nell.
