Colour tattoo of a moonlit mountain landscape with a river and teal hills, set in an oval on the forearm, in a neo-traditional style.

Moonlit mountain landscape on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

An oval landscape shows a full moon with cratered detail among scattered stars and small yellow clouds in a black night sky. Below, grey mountains with blue and yellow highlighted peaks rise above rolling teal hills, with a pale blue river winding through the foreground. The shading is smooth and graduated, with bold outlines and a contained, centred composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been told the river to Ossory Vale runs only on nights when the moon is full, and you have spent three winters proving the clerks wrong with a brass theodolite and a ledger that smells of tallow. Tonight the moon hangs over the Cold Teeth like a coin someone forgot to spend, and the water below it shows silver between the hills.

Old Marrin, who taught you to read contours, said the river never appeared for surveyors. It appeared for people who had stopped looking for it. So you sit on the cairn with the ledger shut on your knee, counting the small yellow clouds that drift past the peaks, and you write nothing down. The hills roll down in teal ridges, each one folding over the next like pages turned slowly, and the river threads between them, bending wherever the stones bend.

You stop counting. A thing that will not be measured is easier to walk beside. You follow the water down through the terraces until the stars lie reflected in it, the grey peaks lean over their own shadows, and the cold works its way into your boots. At the bottom a ferry pole leans against a willow, and beside it someone has scratched a ring into the bark, exactly the width of the moon.

You open the ledger and, for the first time in three winters, draw a single line: an oval, closed at the top by a dark sky and opened at the bottom by water. Beneath it you write, in your best hand, Surveyed. Not to be measured. At dawn the clerks will call it a fair map, and you will let them, because the river is still running under the moon.
