Moon phases tattoo on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A vertical row of five moon phases, from a thin crescent at the top to a smaller crescent at the bottom, sits on the outer thigh. Each moon has soft, watercolour-like shading with mottled craters, and the colour shifts from blue at the top through purple to red at the bottom. The pale skin and light background keep the focus on the small, evenly spaced motifs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The night foreman had left the lamp on over bench four, so Nell worked with the shutters down and the city a smear of orange beyond the glass. The commission was for a bakery on Division Street that wanted the moon painted along its hoarding, five discs in a column, each one a little more of itself than the last.

She started at the bottom with the thinnest sliver, the one her uncle had called the sickle, and mixed it with the same cobalt he used for winter skies. Blue came easily. It was the middle she had to coax, a dab of madder dragged through the grey until the moon looked lit from within, its craters pressed in with a stiff brush and a cloth.

By the time she reached the crescent at the top, the cobalt had gone off on the palette and the madder had sunk into the wet layer, so every colour bled into the next. Her uncle had told her an eclipse was simply a moon that forgot its own edge. She set the last brush in the jar and watched the bench lamp make a small, steady halo on the glass.

At four the owner came in with two coffees and a question about the price. Nell pointed at the hoarding, where the five moons waited to dry, shifting from blue to red like a bruise or a sunset, and said she would hang them before the lorries came. Outside, the cloud over the gasworks chimney thinned, and for a moment one real moon showed through, pale as a plate, not quite matching anything she had painted.
