Moon tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows the moon, with cratered grey detail across the upper half and dark, smoky shading across the lower half. The shading is soft and blended, with fine stippled texture on the lower edge. The tattoo is shown in close view against a brown upholstered background, with no colour ink visible.

The last train had gone from platform two hours before, and the lamp above the ticket hall had a moth in it that would not give up. Old Marjorie Penhale kept the waiting room at Thornbury Road for forty years, and she told the lads who came in from the rain that the moon over the sidings was not the same moon that hung over the sea. Here it was a coin someone had dropped in the dust and then thought better of. You could see the pale craters on it, she said, like thumbprints in flour, and below them the dark went soft and smoky, as if the night had been breathing on the glass.

Her brother Tom had worked the signals in the winter of 1947 and swore he once saw a light walk across the lower half of that moon, slow as a man carrying a lamp through a field. He told the stationmaster, who wrote it in the book, and the book was still in the cupboard under the clock. Nobody ever read past the entry. Marjorie read it every Sunday, mostly to annoy the porters.
When the line was electrified and the sidings were grubbed up for a car park, the moon stayed exactly where it had always been, sitting above the stumps of the old water tower. Marjorie moved to a bungalow in Ferrybridge and took the cupboard key with her by accident. Sometimes, late, the young station staff say they hear a woman humming a hymn tune in the empty ticket hall, and that the light over the bench goes the colour of pewter, and that if you look up through the high window you will see the moon with its dark half turned slightly towards the glass, as though it has been listening too.
