Wave inside a triangle on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large wave curls and breaks within an outlined triangle, with small dots scattered around the crest and in the open space beside it. The linework is crisp and dark, and the water is built from hatched lines and stippled dots that give the wave texture and depth. The tattoo is shown in black ink on pale skin, with the triangle centred on the side of the thigh and the subject filling most of the frame.

The clockmaker's shop on Chandler Lane had a tide table pinned behind the counter, and nobody in Harrow Dock read it except me. Every night after the last trawler docked I sat under the lamp with my loupe and a drawer of brass gears, mending the mechanisms that ran the harbour's old sea-gauges. Nobody asked me to. The gauges told the city when the water would rise, and the city had stopped listening years ago.

Then a girl came in at half one in the morning with a pocket watch that had stopped at a time I recognised. Four minutes past three, the hour the big swell came over the breakwater in the winter of the flood. She wanted it wound. I told her a stopped watch keeps the hour it died at, and she said that was exactly why she had brought it. Her coat was wet to the elbow. She laid a folded card on my bench, and on it someone had drawn a wave folding over itself inside a sharp triangle, its crest flecked with spray.

I opened the back of the watch. Where the maker's name should have been, a tiny wave had been engraved, hatched line by hatched line, curling against the edge of a little triangular frame. Each beat of the balance wheel scattered a dot of light across my bench. I worked until dawn, and when the escapement finally ticked I heard the harbour through it: the slap under the pier, a gull, the drag of a chain.

She paid in coins still warm from her pocket and left the watch behind. Chandler Lane was empty when I went out. At the end of the quay the tide had reached the third step, exactly as the gauge had promised for the first time in a decade. I checked my own watch against the harbour bell. It was four minutes past three.
