Moon with a face and rocket on a shoulder

Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A round cartoon moon with a face and a small rocket embedded in one eye sits on the upper shoulder near the collarbone. The linework is dark and bold, with the moon's surface shaded in yellow, orange and brown. The background shows a blurred indoor room with people in striped tops, and the skin is shown in soft focus.

Mrs Pargeter had let the attic room to the magician on one condition: the rocket stayed in its tin. Every night he climbed to the leads with the telescope and came back down looking aggrieved.

'She winked at me again,' he said over the breakfast kippers. 'Right in the eye. The one with the rocket stuck in it.'

'Gulls wink,' said Mrs Pargeter, rattling the toast rack. 'The moon has better manners.'

That evening the boy from number nine, Frankie Dobbs, came up the ladder after him with a shrimping net and a face full of certainty. The moon was sulking, he said, because her rocket had come down in the wrong place. Walter, who had once been a conjuror on the pier and knew a fib when he heard one, offered him a shilling to prove it.

They sat on the damp leads until the promenade lamps went out. Somewhere below, a tram bell rang for nobody. At last the moon lifted over the pier, round and freckled with craters, one eye screwed shut around a little red and brown rocket. Frankie gasped. Walter laughed until he had to hold the chimney. 'Well,' he said, pocketing the telescope, 'she's not winking now. She's got a splinter, and she's too proud to say so.'
