Moon, mountains and pine trees design

Black and grey · Flash

A shaded full moon sits behind a black silhouette of jagged mountain peaks, with a band of conifer trees along the base of the design. The moon uses soft grey gradients and visible crater detail, while the mountains and trees are solid black with crisp edges. The design is centred on a plain white background with no body part visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon had come up early over Cwm Ddu, so Nell Harrow went out to the kitchen garden with a torch she did not switch on. The beans would want watering before the frost, and the moon was bright enough to show her the rows: leeks in their trench, the cold frames glinting like wet slate. Beyond the wall the mountains stood black against the grey sky, their ridges notched, and the pines along the lower slope gathered so thickly they looked like a fringe of ink.

Her grandfather had kept the garden for forty years and never once let anyone pick by moonlight. He said the moon pulled the sap up the stems and you could lose a whole crop to one careless hour. Nell thought this was nonsense, but she had found that the things she thought were nonsense had a way of turning up in the margins of his notebooks, written small and underlined twice. The last entry, in pencil, said only: Moon low on the Gap. Wait for the second frost.

She waited. The frost came down the valley at midnight, soft as flour, and the moon slid behind the highest peak so the whole hillside went dark except for one white rim. Nell held the watering can and listened to the pines creak. Then the light came back over the saddle, pale and round, and she saw what he had meant. The leeks had loosened in their trench and were leaning towards the gate, as if someone had asked them politely to come along.

Nell set the can down on the path and left them where they stood, silver in the light, until the second frost had come and gone.
