Mountain and sun circle with quote on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo on the forearm shows a circular frame containing a large sun, a range of jagged mountains and layered lake or water lines. Quoted text wraps around the top and bottom of the circle in a hand-lettered, uppercase style. The linework is bold and clean, with soft grey shading on the mountains and lower water, and the design is centred on the forearm against a dark background.

Old Hanne Vos had been lighting the ovens at the lake end of Carrow before the birds woke, and she had learned that the first customers before dawn were never the ones who paid. On the morning the ferry was cancelled, a man came to the back door with a rucksack and a cough, asking whether there was work for a pair of hands. She gave him a shovel of ash to carry and a heel of yesterday's rye.

He said he was walking over the pass to the far side of the water, where his sister had a boat yard. Hanne told him the pass was snowed shut until the sun cleared the ridge, and that the sun would not clear the ridge until the bread was out. So he stayed. He kneaded while she shaped loaves, and between batches he asked what the lake was like in winter. She said it froze from the edges inward, like a story people never finished.
When the first grey light came up over the peaks, the lake showed its lines of ice and ripple, and the man stood at the window with flour on his face. "Do you have room," he said, not quite a question, "for one more?" Hanne looked at the rows of loaves cooling on the racks, counted them, and pushed the last tray toward him. "There is always room for one more loaf," she said. "The rest is up to the pass."
He left at sunrise with the bread wrapped in cloth. Hanne swept the ash and found the shovel leaning where he had set it, and beside it on the step lay a stone worn smooth in the shape of a sun. She kept it on the sill, and every morning after, she lit the ovens and set one extra loaf aside.
