Black and grey fine line tattoo of a mountain range, pine trees, moon and stars inside a circle, with a quote around the edge, on the thigh.

Mountain landscape with quote on thigh

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular tattoo shows a mountain range with pine trees in the foreground, a moon and stars in the sky, and wispy clouds. Two lines of text follow the curve of the circle above and below the scene. The work uses fine hatched and stippled linework with soft grey shading on the peaks, and it is entirely black and grey ink. The circle is centred on the outer thigh, with the scene filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, the lamp's nearly out and I'll not have you tripping on the step. You want the story of the Hollin Pit? Everybody wants that one, though nobody agrees how it ends. My grandmother's version has the moon coming up over Scarth Fell the night the roof came down, and the moon was the only thing that stayed honest all that winter.

There was a girl called Ada Thwaite who kept the tally board at the top gate. Every shift she chalked the names of the men going down and rubbed them out coming up. One February the chalk stayed on Tom Brierley's name for three days. She sat on the stone step with her shawl pulled over her knees and wouldn't let anyone wipe it. The men who went in after him swore later they heard her singing through the rock, the same three lines over and over, because she'd been told a man under stone can hear a voice if it's the right one.

They reached him on the ninth day. His lamp was still burning in his helmet, and his fingers were stretched out toward the tunnel mouth, not toward the timbers or the lamp, but toward the place where the air came in, as if someone on the far side had their hand out. Ada went down the ladder herself, which the overman had forbidden, and she took the hand that was reaching and held it until the cage came up.

That's the whole of it, and you can make of it what you like. Some say the moon over the fell is Tom's lamp. I say it's only the moon, and it's been watching this valley far longer than any of us have been fool enough to dig under it. Now blow that lamp out, and mind the step on your way home.
