Mountain and sun quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a circular scene of mountain peaks, a sun and a horizontal band of water or ridgelines, drawn with fine outlines and soft grey shading. Hand-lettered text curves around the top and right of the circle and continues along the lower edge. The design sits on the inside of a forearm against a dark background, photographed straight on.

The cook on the Marrow Gull kept a pot of barley going at all hours, because the sea did not care whether a man had eaten. One night in the grey hours before the Faroes, a stranger came down the companion ladder with salt in his beard and no bag. He did not sit. He stood by the range with his hands open, the way a man stands when he has been refused at other doors.

The cook had a ladle in one hand and a tin of ship's biscuit in the other. "Where are you bound?" she asked him. He looked up through the hatch at the sky, where a sun was pushing over a line of black peaks and laying a bar of light across the water. "I could not tell you," he said. "I was only ever good at following the light."
She told him the galley had one bench left and one bowl, and that the bowl was not hers to give but the sea's, and the sea took what it was given. He laughed at that, the first time anyone had laughed in that galley since the storm. Then he sat, and the barley went round, and the two of them watched the sun climb clear of the ridges the way sailors watch a thing they have stopped expecting.
When the watch changed he was gone from the bench, though the bowl sat washed on the rack. The cook looked out the porthole and saw only the flat band of the sea, and above it three peaks holding a small round sun between them. She put the kettle on and set out one cup more than the crew needed. Some mornings, she said, you make room for the one who asks.
