Mountain lake in a circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a mountain peak and a lake shoreline with a band of trees sits inside a circle formed by a pine branch border. The linework is thin and solid black with light dotted detail in the water, and the design is set against blurred green woodland. The forearm is shown crossing a bare leg while the hand pulls at a boot lace, with the tattoo as the sharpest point of focus.

Hewitt had engraved coastlines for the county survey for twenty years, and the lake at Carrow Tarn was the first he had been asked to draw inside a wreath. The commission came with a brass plate for the boathouse door and a note from the trustees in a clerk's round hand: something the walkers will recognise. He spent three evenings on the peak alone, cutting it from the north so the light fell the way it did at six in the morning, when snow still clung to the ridge and the water lay flat as slate.

The shoreline gave him trouble. Every sketch came out either too tidy or too wild, until his daughter Nell, home from the mill school with ink on her wrists, leaned over his shoulder and said the trees should be only a dark band, a line the lake could rest against. "Like it's keeping the water in," she said. He told her that was not cartography, then drew it her way, and pricked the water with tiny dots, the way it looked before rain, when nobody had yet thought to go in.
The trustees wanted the pine branches to curl all the way round and close the circle, so the plate would look like a window with its frame still on. Hewitt pinned the finished drawing to the workshop wall and went home for supper. Nell was not at the table. Her boots were gone from the hall, and the note under the salt cellar said only that the tarn stood higher than the gauge showed and she had gone to see for herself.
He carried the plate down to the boathouse at first light, the wreath still sharp under his thumb, and found the door already swinging on a wet hinge. Water lay over the bottom step. He screwed the brass in anyway, straight and level, and stood with his back to the lake until he heard boots on the shingle.
