Black and grey fine line tattoo of a mountain with pine trees, small clouds and rippled water below, on the side of the ribs.

Mountain landscape on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of a mountain peak rises above a cluster of pine trees and rocks, with small clouds drifting around the summit. The lower section tapers into a diamond-shaped area of horizontal wavy lines representing water. The linework is fine and black, with stippled shading on the mountain's slopes, and the design is shown in black and grey on pale skin.

Dear Ottilie, the relief drone finally came over the ridge yesterday, so you can stop worrying that I have gone feral on the top of Hollin Crag. I have the good tinned peaches and a new cog for the water pump, and Mr Abernethy's grandson swears the cloud-line has moved lower this season, which I told him was nonsense until I checked the pressure log myself.

You will remember the old survey photographs we kept in the cabin, the ones with the summit poking through the mist like a pale knuckle. Nobody has seen the real thing in forty years. The sea came up through the valleys, then the pines drowned in their own shadows, and only this shelf of rock is left, with the cloud sitting on its point like a hat somebody forgot to collect. The stippled slopes are still there under the lichen, I promise you. I brushed the grit off them last Tuesday with my sleeve and the lines were sharp as the day they were drawn.

The water is rising slower now. The new seawall the council built on the south face is holding, mostly. I walked the lower terrace at dusk and the ripples were making their little horizontal lines against the stones, exactly the way the old ink used to show them. I stood there a long while counting them. Thirty-one before the light went. Come up when the weather breaks, and bring a pencil. I want you to draw me the other side of the mountain, the one nobody can reach any more, so that when the water finally has it, at least one of us will have kept a record.
