Every night at Porthkennack Cottage Hospital the sea came up through the drains a little, and Nell Tregarthen mopped it back down before the consultant saw. That was the rule her mother had taught her, and her mother's mother before that. The sea was owed nothing on the wards, but it was not a patient, and it did not take kindly to being told so.

On the night in question the water rose through the floor of ward three in a slow black sheet. Nell heard it before she saw it, a hush like someone folding a sail. Old Joss Pascoe lay in bed six with his drip and his string of sea-shells, and the water reached the foot of his bed and stopped there, lifting itself into a curl the height of a man. It hung over the iron frame, spitting fine drops onto the blanket, and it looked at her the way the tide looks at a boat that has been out too late.

Nell did not run. She dipped the mop in the bucket, laid the wet head of it flat on the lino, and said aloud the names of the boats that had gone out from Porthkennack and not come home. Joss had been on one of them and come home alone. The wave bowed. It seemed to count the names with her. When she reached his, the water sank into the drain without a sound, and the curl folded itself back into the dark.

In the morning the sister found a salt line on the floor in the shape of a breaking wave, and Joss awake and asking for his tea. Nell signed off at seven and walked home along the harbour, where the tide was going out as it was supposed to, and she did not look back at the ward windows.
