Fine line mountain range on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black line-art mountain range with several sharp peaks and small bird shapes sits on the upper back, just below the shoulder blade. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the image is in black ink only. The photograph is taken from behind and close up, with the subject's dark curly hair falling over the left side of the frame.

Dear Nan,

The snow came down the valley on Tuesday, and by Wednesday the tops had gone as white as the ewes' bellies. Dad says the three peaks behind Harrow Fell are called the Widows, which is nonsense, but he says it every morning while he scrapes the windscreen, so I have stopped arguing. This morning I counted geese going over in a wobbling line, eleven of them, and I wrote the number on the back of the feed invoice like you taught me.

The lambing shed is cold now that the heater's gone, and the tups are in with the hill ewes until March. Tom from the next farm brought his collie over for the gather, and the dog went up the slope in the dark like a thrown stone. We found two ewes caught in the drift under the wall. We got them out. I dragged one by the fleece and she bleated at me the whole way down, which Dad said was a good sign.

I keep thinking about the ridge you used to point at from the kitchen window, the one that looked like someone had drawn it with a pencil and then lost patience. Dad has gone quiet about the tenancy since the letter came. I haven't told him yet that I'd like to take the lease on the top field myself. I'm writing it here first so I can see whether it sounds sensible on paper.

Come at Easter, if your hip lets you. I'll leave the gate open and the peaks will be clear. Tell me if the small grey birds still come to your feeder, the ones that sit on the fence like punctuation.

Love, Maggie
