Mountain range tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of three mountain peaks sits on the upper back, near the shoulder blade. Thin, sketchy black lines form the peaks and shading, with a few short strokes beneath them that could be birds. The photograph is black and white, with soft focus on the blurred background and the subject's dark wavy hair at the left edge.

The keep at Carreg Ddu had lost its roof before my grandfather was born, so the wall walk was the only dry place for a man with a sketchbook. Every evening I climbed the spiral stair, sat with my back against a cold merlon, and drew the same three peaks through a gap where an arrow slit had crumbled. The middle one always came out too tall. Mrs Pryce at the farm below said the mountains had no names and only the sheep knew them, and the sheep were not telling.

The swifts arrived in the third week of May, dropping off the cliff edge in a shriek and scattering over the valley like thrown pepper. I counted them for something to do. Eleven, then nine, then fourteen when the wind changed. I marked each count in the margin beneath the peaks, and by June the margin was crowded with small pencil ticks that looked, if you squinted, like birds lifting off the slopes.
On the last evening the fog came up from the reservoir and swallowed everything but the top of the tallest peak. I sat until the stars were out, waiting for the light to break, and it did not. Walking down in the dark I felt the stones under my boots and thought of how slowly the land had shoved itself upward, with nobody there to sketch it.
In the morning I tore the page out, folded it twice, and left it under a stone on the top step for whoever came next. The keep needed someone to look at it. The swifts were already gone south, and the three peaks stood where they had always stood, unbothered by my drawing and by me.
