Mountain quote and sun on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo is a five-line block lettering quote in black ink, set above a simple black line drawing of a mountain range. A solid orange sun sits behind the peaks at the lower right, providing the only colour. The lettering is bold and evenly spaced, and the image is a close, straight-on view of the forearm against a light blue surface.

Nobody in Abergwyn believed the upright piano would reach Cwm Isaf, least of all Idris Pugh, who had driven the removals lorry for thirty years and never been asked to take anything where the road refused to go. Gwen Pritchard asked. She stood in the chapel yard with her coat buttoned to the throat and said the piano had come up that mountain in 1952 behind two grey horses, and it would go back up the same way or not at all.

So they went up on foot first, Idris and his nephew Rhys with a borrowed winch and a billhook, cutting back gorse while the sheep watched from the wall. Each afternoon the cloud came down over the top like a lid, and each morning it lifted. By the fourth day the lane was a rust-coloured stripe they could almost trust. Gwen rode up in the cab with a flask on her knees and told Idris, unprompted, that her husband Emrys had carried the piano's legs up that slope on his back, because he had promised her a piano and a promise was a debt.
They hauled it the last hundred yards at dusk, the winch whining, the wheels slipping on wet stone. When the lorry finally rolled onto the flat yard of the farm, the sun broke under the cloud and set the far peaks alight. Gwen did not cry. She lifted the lid, pressed a single key, and the note rolled out over the valley and came back twice off the rock.
Idris drove down in the dark with the empty straps rattling. Rhys asked whether it had been worth it. Idris thought about the sun dropping behind the ridge like a coin into a well and said he supposed they had shifted a mountain or two, just not the ones anyone had marked on the map. Behind them one lamp came on in the farmhouse window, and the note seemed to hang in the cold air a little longer than it should have.
