Colour tattoo of two snow-capped grey mountains with small green trees under a blue sky, inside a black frame with the word mountains, on the upper arm.

Framed mountains with the word mountains

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A simple illustrated design shows two grey mountains with white snow-capped peaks and three small green trees, set against a flat blue sky. The word mountains is written in lowercase above the scene, and a black outline frames the whole piece on a square panel. Bold black outlines and flat areas of colour give it a clean, graphic look on pale skin.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, the crisps aren't going anywhere. You'll all remember Mrs Pardoe's classroom, the one by the boiler that smelt of wet coats. Above her desk she had one picture only, a square of card with a black border and that one word across the top in her neat capitals: mountains. Underneath were two grey peaks with their tips painted white, three green trees at their feet, and a sky so blue it hurt to look at after the dinner bell.

Nobody could tell me why she kept it. Tommy Lusk reckoned it was the Pennines, and Sandra Field said it was a joke, because the highest thing in our town was the gasometer. I used to sit under it and count the trees. Three. Always three. When I asked Mrs Pardoe if she'd been there, she just rubbed the chalk off her fingers and said she'd cut it from a calendar her brother sent from somewhere cold, and the trees were the only bit she was sure of.

Forty years on I still think about that card. The summer I left school I walked out of town with a rucksack and a map that was mostly wrong, and the first hill I climbed had three stunted pines on its shoulder, standing exactly where she'd put them. I sat down in the heather and laughed until a shepherd asked if I'd lost my marbles. So drink up. Mrs Pardoe's card is in my coat pocket, and it's been there since 1979.
