Mountain range tattoo on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind shows a small black tattoo of a mountain range on her upper back, close to the shoulder. The linework is fine and the peaks are partly shaded with stippled grey tones, with the largest summit at the centre. The image is in daylight outdoors, with a pale pink vest top, dark bra strap and grass in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ridge had been wrong on every printed sheet since 1887, and Alderman Pryce knew it because he had walked it with a theodolite strapped to his back and a boy named Tobias carrying the flags. Three peaks stood along the skyline, the middle one higher than the others, and the flanks fell away into scree that the engravers in Southampton had reduced to a single hopeful line. Pryce had never trusted a line he hadn't counted.

They reached the saddle at four in the afternoon with the cloud sitting just above the crags like a lid. Tobias unfolded a sheet of tracing paper and began to draw while Pryce took readings, calling the bearings over his shoulder in a voice made hoarse by forty years of wind. The boy worked in fountain pen, then in a stub of pencil when the ink ran thin, and where the scree met the shadow of the central summit he pricked the paper with dots, hundreds of them, until the grey looked almost like weather. Pryce told him it was wasted effort. Tobias said the mountain had been wasted on the engravers, so the least it could have was honest shading.

The corrected survey went to London that autumn with a covering letter that did not mention the boy at all. The sheet that came back from the printers, however, carried the true ridge, three peaks in their proper order, and a small note in the margin in pencil that nobody had thought to erase. Pryce kept his copy folded in the inside pocket of his coat for the rest of his working life. When it rained, which on that ridge was most days, he could still feel the faint stipple of dots through the paper, pressing back at his fingers like something that had been waiting to be counted.
