Brother Anselm kept the flood board at the ford below the abbey, a plank of oak the length of a man's forearm, with a rectangle cut into its face and a wavering groove running through it. Each morning before the bell he wet his thumb, held it to the water, and scratched the level onto the wood with a nail. The groove was the river. The small hole at its middle was a knot the abbot had never let him plane away, and Anselm had been told to stop asking why.

The spring the thaw came early, the water climbed past the groove and kept climbing. Farmers came up the lane with carts and their children, and the miller's wife brought bread to the gate. They wanted to know what the board said. Anselm told them the water was rising, which they could see for themselves, and that it would stop when it reached the knot, which they could not.
On the third night he sat alone with the lamp and the board on his knees. He had carved the mark every day for thirty-one years and never once let the water touch the hole in the middle. He had thought it was a warning. Now he saw it was simply where the river had never been, and that nothing he cut would change that.
At dawn the water stood level with the knot and no higher. Anselm did not scratch a line. He wet his thumb, held it to the air, and carried the board down to the gate, where he handed it to the miller's youngest girl and told her to keep it dry.
