Mountain and rune tattoos on arm and side

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two black ink designs are visible on skin. The larger one on the upper arm shows a mountain range with a small figure drawn above it, in fine, sketchy linework with light shading. A smaller rune-like symbol sits on the side of the torso near the ribs, and a printed shirt with mountain artwork and partial lettering is worn nearby.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teodor had been climbing for eleven days when the snow gave way to grey scree, and he had only a heel of rye and a knife with a chipped tip left in his pack. The old women in Hallin Dale said the mountain had a crease in its shoulder that opened once in a generation, and that anyone who reached it would either come back wiser or not come back at all. He had not come for wisdom. His sister's goat had strayed up there in March, and the goat was the only dowry the family had.

The crease was there at dusk, a dark seam with a standing stone at its mouth. Someone had cut a mark into the stone, three strokes like a bird's foot crossed by a bar, and when he laid his palm on it the wind dropped as though a door had shut behind him. Inside, the path was wide and dry. A goat bleated somewhere ahead, and then a second voice answered it, low and amused, and Teodor kept walking.

At the top there was no treasure. There was a cairn, a rusted bell with no clapper, and a ledger wrapped in oilcloth. He turned the pages by the last light. Every name was in a different hand, most of them centuries old, each followed by a single word: returned. His grandfather's name was there, in ink gone brown. Beneath it the page was blank.

He wrote Teodor, then after a moment added returned, and set the pen down. The goat was waiting at the foot of the crease, chewing a thistle as if it had never left. His sister met him at the gate with a lamp and asked where he had been. He told her the mountain had kept an account, and that for once they were square.
