Mountain range tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small black ink tattoo of a jagged mountain range with three peaks sits on the side of the ribcage. The outline is thin and the darker areas on the peaks are filled in with solid black, with some soft shading. The photograph is taken at close range, cropped below the chest and above the waistband, against a teal sports bra and a plain background.

No, don't look at the edge of the paper, look at the line of it, the way the ridge goes up, drops, and comes up again like a man breathing through his teeth. That's Harrow Edge. My gran's gran could name every notch of it from the pit head, and she always said the peaks were three sisters who got tired of standing and lay down in the wind to wait for their men off the night shift.

The eldest was Ada, the tallest, and she kept the lamp on her shoulder so the colliers coming down the drift could find the way home. Bet was the middle one, and she could whistle the men in from a mile off. Lil was the smallest and the only one who ever went out past the dark of the rowan trees. Every shift, the three of them watched the mouth of the drift, and every shift the last cart came up with someone missing from its count, and every shift they lay down a little lower.

Then came the winter the mist sat on the valley for three days and the siren at the top of Tallow Dene went and didn't stop. Ada was too stiff to climb, and Bet had lost her whistle to a cough, so Lil took the lamp up the middle peak herself, where the rock is black from old fires, and she held it over her head until her arms went numb. Forty men came up out of that fog following one small light, and not one of them asked how a girl had got so high.

The soot never came off that top, you can still see it when the weather's clear. So when the lamp's lit in the back window of any house in Tallow Dene, it isn't for anyone in particular. It's just what we do, in case somebody's still out on the edge of the dark.
