Mountain range along the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A band of mountain peaks runs horizontally across the side of the ribcage, drawn with thin outlines and soft grey shading on the larger peaks. The ink is black and grey, and the skin tone and soft fabric of a jumper frame the tattoo against a plain, warm background. The mountains sit centrally in the frame with a hand resting above them.

The ferry drops you at Harrow Quay with a tin trunk and a rolled sheet of tracing paper, and the island's ridge is already waiting in the haze, seven peaks in a broken line like a thumb run along a saw blade. Your aunt Morwenna left you the survey contract, the boathouse and a debt to the council. Nobody on the mainland had asked why a woman in her sixties spent thirty years drawing the same skyline.

The first week you walk the ridge with a clinometer and a notebook. Her peaks have names in her hand: Ash, Little Sister, the Bishop, the one that never holds snow. Beside each she has pencilled a bearing and a date, and the dates step back a year at a time until the last is inked rather than pencilled. You measure them again. The Bishop has dropped a metre since the first sheet, or your instrument is lying, and the men at the quay say the same about their hulls.
On the ninth evening the fog lifts off the water all at once and the whole range stands black against a copper sky, sharper than anything she ever drew. You sit on the harbour wall with the notebook open and understand that she was not recording the mountains. She was recording how they looked from the one spot where you could see them all in a line, and you are sitting in it.
You trace the outline onto the back of her last sheet, peak by peak, and at the Bishop you press harder than you need to, so the mark will still be there when the light changes.
