Mountain range with pine trees on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A fine black linework mountain range with pine trees at its base spans the upper back, shaded with fine hatching and grey tones. Below the peaks, a row of dotted triangular lines forms a geometric frame that sits beneath the landscape. The photograph is taken from behind on a plain dark background, showing the tattoo across the shoulder blade area.

The wedding was set for the first warm week of spring, which in those hills meant the snow still lay in the high gullies. Tomas came up from the lowland with a sack of salt, two silver spoons and a goat that would not walk in a straight line. At the last stand of pines the bride's father stopped him with a raised hand and scratched a shape in the mud with his stick: three peaks, and beneath them three small triangles, dotted where the ground was soft. You will rest at each of these, he said, and leave something behind at each one. Then you may come down for the feast.

Tomas left the spoons under the first triangle, wedged in a crack where a stone had split. The goat sat down in the gorse and refused to rise, so he tied it there and promised to fetch it later. At the second rest, where the trees thinned and the light went thin and blue, he set the salt down in a ring and sat with his back against a rock until the cold came up through his boots. He did not sleep. He counted the pines below him, nineteen of them, then lost count and began again.
When he reached the top the bride was already sitting on the cairn with her boots off, eating an apple. She had come up the river side, which everyone agreed was the long way, and she had not left anything at the triangles at all. Tomas stared at her. She shrugged and said her father only ever tested the men who could not find another way. Then she handed him the apple, and they went down together through the pines, leaving two lines of prints in the snow that the wind filled in behind them before the feast had even begun.
