Mountain, sunburst and pine forest on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo shows snow-capped mountain peaks beneath a fan of radiating rays, with a lake or river line and a small tent below. A diamond-shaped panel at the bottom contains dense pine trees shaded with dotted and hatched black ink. The fine, even linework is set against a plain pale forearm on a grey fabric background.

Dear Joanie,

I know you've been ringing the school office for my address, so here it is, and no, I'm not coming to the reunion. Don't sulk. You'll have the gym, the squash, the lukewarm sausage rolls and everyone's husband asking what I do now. I'd rather tell you about the Sunday we pitched the green tent on the shingle at Loch Tarn, when Mr Harrow's old map promised a path and we found a bog instead.

We were sixteen and certain the mountains would wait for us. They didn't wait. They stood there at dawn with every peak lit from behind, and the sun broke through a notch in the ridge and threw its rays out like someone had tipped a box of pins across the sky. You made me stand still and count them. I reached forty-one before the light shifted and I lost my place, and you said it was the first honest thing you'd ever seen me admit.

We spent the afternoon walking down through the pines, which grew in such tight rows that the trunks looked like pencil strokes. Our trainers were soaked to the ankle. You fell in the stream and laughed so hard you had to sit on a rock. I still have the photograph, though it's mostly blur and your elbow.

What I think about most is the way you stopped laughing when the path split in two and neither of us knew which way the tent was. We stood there a long time, shivering, until you said we should simply pick one and see. We picked wrong, and it took until dark to find our way back, and I've never been so glad to be lost with someone.

So you go and have your reunion. I'll be counting rays in the kitchen with the window open, and if you ever want to try the notch again, you know where I am.

Love, Ruth
