Mountain range on the inner wrist
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A jagged mountain range in black ink runs across the inner wrist, with peaks of varying height and a few darker shaded facets. The linework is built from fine stippled dots, which fade into soft grey shading toward the base of the design. The pale skin and dark backdrop give the tattoo strong contrast, and the hand is cropped to the fingers with a thin ring on one finger.

Mara Quennell had been asked to draw the Skerrow range for the third time that winter, and for the third time she refused to use a ruler. "The ridge doesn't run straight," she told the county clerk, tapping her pencil against his blotter. "It stops to think, then starts again higher up."

Her father had taught her to read ground from the kitchen table, pressing a thumb into a heap of flour to show where a valley folded. He had surveyed those hills for thirty years before the pit closed and the damp got into his chest. She kept his tin of fine-nibbed stippling pens in the dresser drawer, the kind he used for shading scree, and every peak she drew was built from dots, thousands of them, so the rock rose out of the paper like weather.
The clerk wanted hard edges for the printers. Mara gave him the jagged outline and let the grey bleed downward toward the foot of the sheet, where the farms and the chapel roof sat small and sure. "People don't want to be told how high it is," she said. "They want to know which way the light falls."
That evening she walked up the lane with the finished plate under her arm. The snow on the tops had caught the last of the sun, and she stopped at the gate the way her father always had, counting the summits against the sky until the dark took the last one. Then she went home and pinned a fresh sheet to the board.
