Pine tree and mountain range tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small pine tree is inked in solid black on the inner forearm near the wrist, while a mountain range sits along the side of the ribs. The mountain outline uses thin, sketchy black linework with grey shading on the peaks. The image is mostly neutral skin tones with the two tattoos placed at opposite sides of the frame.

The last waltz at the Strathcairn hall always ran long, because Mr Dunlop would not let his fiddle stop early, and by eleven the tin roof was ticking with rain and the windows had steamed white. I worked the cloakroom hatch with a biscuit tin of numbered tickets, handing back coats that smelled of peat smoke and wet wool.

A man I had never seen before leaned on the hatch and asked whether the peaks showed from the car park. I said they did on a clear night, which was a lie, because it had not been clear since May. He laughed and asked for a pen. On the back of a beermat he drew a line of mountains, the middle one taller than the rest, and beside them a single pine with its branches stacked like the rungs of a ladder. "That's the Cairn," he said, tapping it. "And that's the tree my father planted the spring I was born. He'd want it in the picture."
I did not know what to say, so I told him his coat was ticket forty-one. He never came back for it. The band struck up a reel, then a slow foxtrot, and when the lights went down I found the beermat wedged under the tin, a ring of lager dried across the ridge.
In the morning the mist lifted off the glen, and I stood in the car park with the mat in my hand, matching his drawing to the real thing. The same three humps. The same tree leaning out at the edge of the road. I folded the mat into my purse behind the ticket stubs and went back inside to hang the coats.
