Black and grey fine line tattoo on a forearm, with a sun, mountains and pines above a sunflower on one band and a crescent moon and stars on a lower band.

Mountain, sunflower and moon forearm bands

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two horizontal bands wrap the forearm. The upper band shows a rayed sun, a mountain range, pine trees and a sunflower, while the lower band shows a sunflower, a wave-like scroll, a crescent moon, small stars and scattered dots. The work uses fine black linework with light hatching and stippling, and the image is in black and white with no colour ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big top's backdrop had come down in Shrewsbury with a crack like a shot, and Mr Pemberton wanted it sound by Sunday. I was up the ladder with a tin of lamp black when the dawn panel began to lift off its frame, so I painted over the damp patch instead: a range of mountains going blue at the edges, pines the height of a man, a sun with rays like cut wire.

Pemberton came round the back of the caravans with his hat in his hands. "Nobody wants a sunrise on the Waltzer, Ada," he said. "They want the lights." I told him the sunflower on the lower panel was already in, a whole head of it bowing over the bottom edge where the rain had eaten the paint, and that a sunflower follows whatever light is on it. He studied it a long time and said it could stay if I did the moon as well.

So I did the night. A crescent low over a wave I'd copied from a Cornish postcard, stars pricked in with a sable nib, dots spilled across the canvas like sawdust off a dropped tray. The fair ran eleven more towns that season. Each evening the generator brought the bulbs up one by one, and the painted sky carried on working beside them.

When the frame finally folded flat in a barn outside Ludlow, I found Pemberton's hat on the lorry step. He'd had a small star painted on the crown, put there in the dark when nobody was watching. I never asked him when.
