Mountains and pine forest on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows jagged mountain peaks rising above a dense row of pine trees, enclosed within a pointed, shield-like outline. The mountains use fine linework and stippled shading to suggest rock faces, while the trees are built up with dark, dense marks that fade towards the lighter sky. The design is entirely in black and grey ink and fills the frame centrally against a plain arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad never trusted the compass if he could see the land instead. He ran the boat by the mountains, lining the three sharp tops up over the dark line of pines until the water went flat and the trawl came up heavy with haddock. I was fourteen the first time he put my hands on the wheel off Rattray Head and told me to keep the notched ridge square over the trees.

"The jagged ones lie to you," he said, tapping the glass. "The pines are the honest part. When the trees thin out into the sky, you're over the edge of the bank. Come about then, or you'll be picking nets off the rocks."

He died the winter the fleet lost the Kestrel, and I inherited his boat, his cap and his habit of squinting at the horizon before he'd look at a chart. I didn't need the mountains much after that. I had the trees. Then came the February haar that swallowed the harbour light, and the plotter in the wheelhouse went blank with a fault I never fixed. I stood at the wheel with the radio full of other skippers calling their positions, and I kept seeing those three peaks in my head, the pines below them thinning towards grey.

I brought her round when the trees went pale. We hauled the trawl in water that was barely ten fathoms deep, and the fleet came in behind us in ones and twos. Later, in the cabin, I wiped the condensation off the window and drew a shape with my finger, a pointed shield with the mountains above and the forest below, the way Dad had always sketched it on the back of his fuel receipts. The glass stayed cold under my hand, and I left the drawing there until the sun burned it off.
