Mountains, sunburst and waves on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a row of peaks rising beneath a fan of radiating sun rays, with clouds at the sides and a band of stylised ocean waves below. The design is built from black outlines and fine hatched lines, with shading on the mountain faces and parallel lines within the water. It is in black ink only and sits within a rounded composition on pale skin against a plain light background.

Rhona had counted the mountains from the breakwater for eleven years and always got a different number. Five on a clear morning, seven when the haze lay low, and on the rare days the sun came up behind them, none at all, only a bright seam where the sea met the sky. Her father said they were on the far shore, past the shipping lane. Her mother said they were a rumour the tide brought in with the herring.

Then the October gale swept the lobster pots off the slipway and tore the sign from the Ferry Office, and on the first still morning after it, Rhona walked out to the end of the wall with a tin of red paint and a brush borrowed from the chandlery. She did not paint anything. She stood with the lid in her hand and watched the peaks rise out of the grey like a page being turned, their shoulders pale with snow, the sun behind them throwing rays straight across the water to her boots.
Behind her the harbour bell rang for the early boat. Cloud was already piling in from the west, white and bulging over the fish market, and the swell began lifting the moored hulls one after another. A wave broke against the wall, lean and furrowed, and Rhona thought of the hatching her father used on his charts to show the depth of the channel.
She went back up the hill and told no one. That evening, when the boat came in heavy with mackerel, she took a pencil to the back of the ferry timetable and drew what she had seen: the rays, the peaks, the water folded like a sheet. Her father looked over her shoulder and said the mountains were too close together. She said they had been exactly that far away.
