Mountain valley landscape in a circle
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows a mountain valley with a ridge, a flat plain and a winding river running towards the lower right. The image is built from fine stippled dots that create the shading and texture of the rock and distant slopes, with a pale sky left mostly open at the top of the circle. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on smooth skin against a blurred indoor background.

The ring was still in the vicar's cardigan pocket when Mum's drawing came out of the envelope, and nobody in the church hall knew what to do with their hands. It was a circle the size of a dinner plate, done in fountain pen, every shadow built from tiny dots the way she used to do the bird tables for the school noticeboard. A valley, a ridge, a flat bit of plain. A river wandered out of the bottom right as if it had somewhere better to be.

Dad had asked her to draw the place they met, which turned out to be a lay-by above Llanwrtyd on a wet Tuesday in 1979, a broken exhaust and a flask of stewed tea. She hadn't drawn it from memory. She had walked back up the next morning with a sketchbook and sat on the same wall until the light went flat, then come home and stippled it for six weeks at the kitchen table, telling everyone she was only doing the crossword.
Gareth read the card aloud. 'For the river. You always said we'd go wherever it went.' Then he turned the paper over. On the back, in her small capitals, was a question she had never once asked out loud: WHERE DOES IT GO AFTER THE EDGE? Dad laughed until he had to sit down, and then he took the pen from the table, reached across the tablecloth, and added a single dot just past the point where the river left the frame.
He passed the pen to me. I put a dot of my own beside his, small enough that nobody would notice, and the hall went back to being a hall, with a kettle on and someone's cousin already asking where the speeches were.
