Muscle car and smoke on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large realistic tattoo of a black classic muscle car seen from the rear three-quarter view, with chrome bumper, twin red tail lights and a blank number plate. Smoky grey clouds and tyre smoke surround the car and fade into the skin at the edges. Shading is smooth and detailed in black and grey, with the red tail lights as the only strong colour, and the photo shows the arm in two stacked views.

The car came back to Halloway's yard the same week the quarry road flooded, which was the first thing Ruth Oakes didn't like about it. Nobody had towed it. It sat under the sodium lamp by the fuel pumps with its engine ticking, black as wet slate, and when she walked out with her coffee the rear tyres were already smoking, though the thing hadn't moved an inch.

Her father had sold that coupe to Wendell Pike in 1971 for four hundred dollars and a promise. Pike raced it down the quarry road every Saturday until the Saturday he didn't come back, and the sheriff found his tail lights still burning in the reeds, two red eyes that never went dark. Her father always said the car kept going out there, looking for a finish line Pike never crossed. He said it the way other men talked about weather.

Ruth went out with a socket set and a tin of old number plates she'd been meaning to throw away. The one she picked had no letters on it, only a blank rectangle, the way Pike's had always been. She fitted it, tightened the bolts with her knuckles, and said to nobody in particular that the road was closed now and he could go home.

The smoke thinned around the wheels like steam off a cooling pan. The engine stopped. By morning the car was gone from the yard, and only the two red lights stayed on, hanging above the reeds on the quarry road, until the sun came up and they dimmed one at a time, the way a man lowers his hands once he has been let off.
