Mushrooms and rainbow diamond on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows several mushrooms with bold black outlines, in pink, yellow, orange, teal and purple. They sit in front of a rainbow-striped diamond that points downwards, and the caps are shaded with soft gradients. The design is centred on the outer upper arm against a plain skin background, with a striped backdrop at the edges of the frame.

Sit closer, you lot, and the ones at the back can have the good cushions, because I'm not getting up again. Right. Nobody buys a ticket to see a clown who has stopped being funny. Old Ada Quill ran the cookhouse and the lost property box, and she was the one who found the mushrooms.

They came up in the damp field behind the big top, a ring of them, caps the colour of a pig's ear, and Ada wouldn't let anyone pick them until she'd sat with them an hour. She said they were the only thing in that field still growing on purpose. So she dried them on the stove rail, sewed a banner from the red and orange and yellow of the last good tent, painted a diamond on it pointing down like a dropped plumb line, and striped it with every colour left in the paint pot.

The night the council's men came to measure the field, she hung the banner from the tent pole without asking anybody. The men stood in the mud reading their clipboards, then looked up and forgot what they had come for. That little striped diamond hung over the sawdust, and the mushrooms on it seemed to lean towards the lamps, as if they wanted to hear the music.

The field was sold by spring. But I'll tell you what Ada said when they loaded the last wagon: a thing that points at the ground is only pointing at where the seeds are. Now, who's got a biscuit left?
