Octopus tentacles rising from a teacup
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows several octopus tentacles with rows of suckers spiralling upwards and out of a footed teacup with a fluted rim. The linework is a clean, even black outline with hatched lines on the cup and curling tendrils at the top. It is a flat design on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Nell had served the same customer a pot of Assam every morning for eleven years, and every morning the octopus in the teapot lifted one arm over the rim to take the sugar tongs before she could set them down. The shop on Strand Quay was the last dry room in Gravesend that still sold tea by the cup, and the regulars had long since stopped flinching at the creature curled in the bottom of the big Rockingham pot.

"He's getting greedy," said Mr Abiola, tapping his spoon against the rim. "Wants a biscuit now."
Nell watched the tentacles coil up out of the china, slow and pale, rising like steam that had decided to have opinions. One arm found the plate of custard creams and drew it gently across the counter towards the bell. The suckers made a small wet sound on the saucer. Nobody in the shop mentioned the sea wall any more, or how the tide now sat level with the top step. They had agreed, without saying so, that the tea was the one thing still going the way it used to.
Her grandmother had kept the octopus alive through the last drought, feeding it crab from the river and murmuring to it through the spout. Nell had never asked whether it understood. She suspected it understood more than the council did.
Mr Abiola finished his cup and left a coin under the saucer, which was the arrangement. When the bell rang behind him, the arm that had taken the biscuit lifted once, a short pale salute, and sank back into the dark tea like a diver going home.
