Music note tattoo on the ear

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close black and white photograph of an ear showing a small, simple black music note tattooed on the outer rim of the ear. A silver stud sits in the upper ear and a small bar piercing sits near the tragus, with dark hoop earrings in the lobe. The soft, even lighting and plain background keep the focus on the ear and the solid black ink.

Dear Ewan,

The ferry timetable is still pinned in the kitchen where you left it, and I keep pretending it says something other than what it says. Two sailings a day now, the second at quarter past five in the dark. Mrs Lyle asked after you in the shop and I told her you were learning the bass in Glasgow, which is the sort of thing you would have wanted me to say.

Dad's fiddle is still in the cupboard under the stairs. I took it out on Thursday because the wind had the back door rattling like someone wanting in. I could not get a proper tune out of it, only the low string that sits under everything, so I kept bowing it until the floorboards hummed back. It made me think of the little black quaver you inked on the rim of your ear the week before you sailed, the one you said was a reminder that I owed you a dance at the wedding.

Mairi says there is a new lad at the pier who can whistle a whole reel without taking a breath. I told her to ask him what he does on a Tuesday, since the island offers a whistler nothing but the boat. Then I walked down to the slipway and sat where we used to sit. The tide came in over the stones exactly when it was supposed to, and I thought, well. The fiddle is more or less in tune. The kettle is on. You can tell me the rest when you ring.

Come home at Easter. Bring the bass if you must, but bring it in the car, not on the boat. I am not losing you to the sea twice.

Love, Kirsty
