Tiny icons behind the ear

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a person's ear with a cluster of small, separate tattoo icons behind it. The icons include a solid black bar, a ring with a centre dot, a small fork and knife, and a tiny hook-like mark. The linework is thin and the ink is black with no shading, and the plain background of skin keeps the composition simple.

The last ticket of the night came through at ten to four, and Nadia Okafor read it twice before she clipped it to the hook. Two eggs over, no toast, and a note in capitals: NOT FOR ME, FOR THE BOY IN THE BOOTH. The boy had been asleep since midnight with his head on a folded coat, and the rain outside the Lantern Hatch had turned the windows into mirrors.

Behind the pass, the whiteboard was a language nobody outside the kitchen could read. A black bar meant the walk-in door needed lifting. A ring with a dot meant the back burner was on low and someone had to remember it. A fork and knife meant prep, and the bent hook on the rail meant the last tray of bread, left there since Tuesday. Nadia had invented most of it with Dev, the day cook who quit in March and left only the symbols behind.

She wiped the board with her sleeve and started again. Bar: the walk-in is shut. Ring: the stove is off, I checked it twice. Fork and knife: someone has eaten. Hook: the bread is for the boy, take it if he wakes. She stood there longer than the job needed, listening to the fridge hum and the slow breathing on the other side of the swing door.

At six the morning cook came in shaking rain off his jacket, read the board, and said nothing. He took a marker, drew a ring beside the hook, then a small circle, and beneath them, very neatly, a second fork and knife. Nadia understood he had answered in the only language they shared, so she set out two plates and went to wake the boy.
