The lamp at Skerrin Point had been dark for three nights when the elephant came up the shingle. Nobody on the island had seen one before, though the old men said they had seen a picture of one in a book at the mainland school, and that it had been the colour of wet slate.

Mairi Lennox, who kept the light with her father's rheumatic hands and her own stubborn ones, watched it from the top of the gallery stairs. It walked the way a boat walks in a swell, slow and sure, its trunk lifted like a question. Behind it the tide was going out over the rocks where the cargo ship Ellenmoor had broken her back in the winter.
Her father said the sea had given up its dead and its cargo at once, and the elephant was cargo. It had come from a crate of painted tin toys that had split open in the surf. It wanted only what every creature wanted from a lighthouse, a place to stand where the dark could not reach it.
So she fed the wick, then climbed down and set the elephant on the lamp-room sill beside the brass oil can. In the morning its trunk was pointing at the sea, and the wreck's bell was ringing though no one had gone out to ring it. The keeper's daughter kept the light for forty years after that. Ships came in past the rocks, and on the sill the small black beast stood with its legs planted square, and no one on Skerrin ever asked it to move.
