Music notes along the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of an ear showing a small row of music symbols tattooed along the helix and lobe edge, including a treble clef, a flat sign, a sharp or natural sign, a bass clef and three beamed eighth notes. The linework is thin and crisp, with solid black ink and light grey shading on the clef. The symbols are arranged in a diagonal line against soft natural skin tones, with dark hair framing the edges of the photo.

Nobody on Cardale Ward believed Ada Pickup when she said the lift played a tune after midnight, so she stopped mentioning it and started writing things down instead. A treble clef's worth of rising notes, then a sour little flat that made her teeth ache. She kept them on the back of a blood pressure chart, folded in her pocket beside the biro.

Eli Garside, the night porter, had a view on it. His mother used to say the dying hum what they cannot say, and a listener who copies it right carries the tune to the door it belongs to. Ada thought that was nonsense until bay four. Mr Halloran had been humming the same figure all week, and every time the nurses tried to tidy it, he went quiet and turned his face to the wall.
On the Thursday she sang the phrase back to the lift at four in the morning. The doors slid open on an empty corridor, and from somewhere far below came a bass note, low enough to feel through the floor tiles. Eli took the stairs down to the old basement, where the choir room had been before the hospital shut it up, and found the piano lid raised and a sheet of music propped on the stand. Someone had pencilled a sharp in the margin, and beneath it, in careful capitals, the words TELL HER IT IS RIGHT.
By six the bed in bay four was stripped and squared off. Ada took the folded chart from her pocket, smoothed it on the trolley, and found under her three falling notes a fourth line she had never written, climbing back up to the start.
