Treble clef tattoo behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A single black tattoo of a treble clef sits on the skin behind the ear, with its tail curling down and loops forming curves at the top. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photo is taken close up, with the ear and dark hair framing the design against pale skin.

By the third night out of Grimsby the wireless has given up everything except the shipping forecast and a hiss like someone breathing through a shell. You keep the set on anyway. Skipper Haddow says a man who stops listening to the sea stops hearing it, and you have never been sure whether he means the radio or the water.

The fleet's chatter comes through at dusk, boats calling each other across forty miles of grey. Somebody aboard the Kittiwake has a tin whistle and a poor memory, and between the static you catch a tune that climbs, turns back on itself and loops again, the way the gulls work the wind behind the stern. You copy it onto the back of the catch log in pencil, because the shape of the notes is the only part that comes through clean.

Haddow sees the scribble and laughs. He calls it a tadpole with ambitions. But he goes quiet when you play the tape back to him, and he tells you the Kittiwake's whistler went over the side in February, and that nobody has played a note on that boat since.

Next morning the fog lifts and the wheelhouse glass is wet with breath. You trace the tune with one finger in the condensation, the long tail dropping down toward the rail, and watch it run in slow beads until only the top loops are left, sitting there like a note held too long.
