Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of an ear showing a small tattoo of two beamed eighth notes in black ink, positioned on the inner rim of the ear. The linework is thin and clean with solid black filled note heads and stems. The rest of the image is in natural skin tones with dark hair at the edge of the frame and a pale pearl stud earring in the lobe.

The night the snow shut the upper pass, a lorry from the Varsk side came up to my booth with its wipers still going, and the driver wound his window down before I'd asked him to. He was taking a dead cellist's scores to her nephew in Leeds, he said, a crate of them under a tarpaulin. I lifted the top folder and turned pages under my torch while the heater ticked. Most of it was dense and smudged with pencil, but on one sheet someone had written a small phrase in the margin: two eighth notes joined by a beam, one high, one low, and beside them, in careful capitals, BREATHE HERE. I asked the driver to hum it. He hummed two notes, and the second one dropped like a step down a staircase in the dark.
My father used to whistle that exact fall while he shaved, every morning, long after he had any reason to be cheerful. He taught it to me on a tin whistle before his posting took him east, and it was the last thing I heard him play. I had not thought of it in years, and I stood there in the cold with the stamp in my hand longer than the rules allow.
I stamped his papers and handed them back. "Breathe there," I told him, and he looked at me as though I'd said something in another language, then laughed and let the clutch out. The barrier rose, and his tail lights slid off down the white road towards Leeds.
