Musical staff and notes around a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows several horizontal five-line musical staves with a treble clef at the top left and groups of black notes and rests across them. The linework is clean and even, with solid black ink and no shading. Three photographs side by side show the same forearm from different angles against a dark background.

The ruling pen had dried to a crust again, so Uncle Tom spat on it and drew the first stave across the page with the edge of a rule, the way he had every Sunday since the mill closed. Outside the window the beeches at the edge of Harrow Wood bent under a westerly, and I could hear it through the glass, a long soft roar like the sea we had never seen.

The choir needed a new anthem for the harvest, and he had promised the vicar something in four parts by Thursday. He wrote fast, five lines at a time, the clef squashed at the left-hand end like a fist. Each bar he set down he hummed under his breath, then tapped on the table with one finger, counting. I sat on the stool by the stove and listened to him get it wrong and right again.
By the third week the doctor in Ashby had told him what I already knew, that his hearing was going the way his knees had, and that he should stop trusting his own scores. So I became his ears. He would hum a phrase and I would sing it back, and when I got it wrong he would put down the pen and laugh until he coughed. The blackbird that sat on the gatepost each dusk turned into a crotchet, then a rest, then a long note that ran over the bar line and didn't come back.
On the Thursday he handed me the page and said, Sing the last stave, lad, the one that goes round and round. I sang it into the cold kitchen. It was only the wind in the beeches and a blackbird that had stopped, and when I looked up he had shut his eyes, his lips moving on the same silent tune, his fingers pressed flat against the table as if they could feel the lines.
